Meet Gina
My name is Gina Hughes. I am running for Maumee City Council and I would like you to learn a little more about me and why I am running.
I spent 37 years in the Lucas County Treasurer’s Office serving the residents of Lucas County. I started as a Real Estate Clerk/Cashier in 1987, then was promoted to Supervisor of the Cashiers in 1991 and given the additional duty of supervising the payment processing operations when we automated the process in 1993.
My main duties besides overseeing all money transactions were to produce the Daily Balance Sheet for the Treasurer’s Office, maintain the integrity of all deposits and ensure that we were in balance with the Lucas County Auditor’s Office monthly.
Over my tenure I was involved in upgrading the tax accounting system and two general public accounting systems with the Lucas County Commissioners and the Lucas County Auditor’s Office which includes the upgrade to the Oracle system in use by the County today. I retired in December of 2023 as the Director of Financial Affairs for the Treasurer’s Office.
I moved to Maumee in 1999 when I met and married my husband, Don. He had grown up here and graduated from Maumee High School. We left Maumee for several years but moved back after our daughter became school age so she could attend the Maumee City Schools, she graduated in 2021.
One of my main reasons for deciding to run for council was because a friend of mine who also lives here in Maumee said to me that no residents of a city should have to spend so much of their time worrying about what their elected officials are going to do to them next!
I have spent a significant amount of my lifetime working for and serving the public. I am well versed in ethical and appropriate public service behavior. My years spent in the Treasurer’s Office have taught me that all people deserve to be treated with respect, especially when dealing with their public tax funds.
I am not the type to bash other people but there needs to be a definite change with city administration, hence my decision to throw my hat into the ring.
I am a person of integrity. I believe in transparency. I act with respect. I believe I can help restore some confidence to the citizens of this city with your voice and my actions..
